John & Cassie

The heart of a city beats within its people.  It’s one of the reasons I love Detroit.  I read a quote recently that really summed up this eclectic city.  “Detroit is magical.  It’s a little bit of everything.  Its contemporary, it’s vintage, it’s artsy, it’s rock and roll.  It’s sometimes pretty and sometimes gritty.  It’s my city, and I love it.”  And this is the city where John and Cassie fell in love.

When John and Cassie booked me to photograph their Detroit wedding, I was thrilled.  The vibrancy of the city was only matched by the personality of these two.

I had already booked John’s sister’s Vermont wedding for next year.  Lia, I can’t thank you enough for recommending me!  Having that family connection between weddings is so cool, making it feel even more personal.  Lia herself ordained the wedding, making it just a little extra special!

John and Cassie, I loved working with these guys.  They captured this essence of old world glamour on their wedding day.  Cassie’s dress had a vintage feel to it, all lace with a satin pewter sash that matched John’s dove grey suit.  Shades of blue tied together Cassie’s bouquet and John’s boutonniere perfectly.   Cassie’s pearl necklace and the couple’s favorite sunglasses completed the look.  Let’s get this party started!

The ceremony took place outdoors at the Shelby Township Heritage Gardens, and the weather was fantastic!  There is never a better backdrop for photos than nature itself.  Cassie and a brigade of family and friends made every single decoration and flower themselves with silks and book flowers.  Cassie made special mention of this, and was so grateful for their help and support. We then dove into downtown Detroit for some really unique and fun portraits, and the dynamic cityscape was our canvas.

The reception was held at the Rust Belt Market in Ferndale.  I had visited this hip local artists market in Ferndale before to check out all the great shops, but had never shot a wedding there.  What a great choice!  Oh, and I did mention the amazing craft beer?  Definitely a beer lover’s paradise.

Amidst the festivities, the sun dropped toward the horizon, blazing the sky this incredible vivid pink.  John, Cassie, and I ducked out of the party, ever so briefly, to snap some amazing photos right in the middle of 9 Mile Road, the couple glowing under the early evening light.  A great end to a great day, and a whole new beginning.

Testimonial

If you prefer creative candid and natural shots over overdone posed photos, this is your guy! Of course we did pose for shots, but he was such a great director, and knew exactly when to click the shutter to make them feel natural, every photo turned out beautifully. We are a non-traditional couple and did things a little weird for our day, he was on board with all of it, was never judgmental, or made us do something we weren't comfortable with. Jesse was above and beyond... Read More
